ECCC Men's Tennis Falls at No. 15 Hinds

East Central Community College's men's and women's tennis teams dropped a pair of matches to Hinds Community College on Monday, April 9, in Raymond.

The East Central men fell 8-1 to the No. 15 Hinds Eagles, while the Lady Warriors dropped a 6-3 match to the Hinds Lady Eagles.

A bright spot for the ECCC women was that freshman Bethany Wellerman of Newton County Academy remained undefeated in singles play in MACJC matches, said East Central head coach Jay Pacelli.

In the men's doubles action, Hinds' Carlos Trujillo/Mateo Garcia defeated EC's Tom Langelaar (Veldhoven, Netherlands) and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central, 8-5; EC's Willie Wooten of Warren Central and Landon Gibson of Clarkdale defeated Eric Holmes/Jamal Holmes-Griffin, 9-7; and Hinds' Drew Rexrode/Bryce Livingston defeated EC's Emontie Lewis of Terry and Jake Wofford of East Webster, 8-2.

In the men's singles, Trujillo beat EC's Langelaar, 6-0, 6-1; Garcia beat EC's Jabour, 6-2, 6-0; Holmes beat EC's Wooten, 6-1, 6-0; Rexrode beat EC's Lewis, 6-4, 6-2; Livingston defeated EC's Gibson, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8; and Hinds' Aaron Galloway beat EC's Isaac Keen of Winston Academy, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.

In the women's doubles matches, Hinds' Stefy Varon-Diaz/Paula Gutierrez beat EC's Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Tatiana Quinonez (Bogota, Colombia), 8-2; Hinds' Madison Curtis/Anna Hayden Taylor beat EC's Alexis Tindall of Newton County Academy and Caylee Grace Yarborough of Loyd Star, 8-2; and Hinds' Jordan Warren/Brooke Myers beat EC's Julia Johnston of Florence and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy, 8-6.

In the women's singles, Varon-Diaz beat EC's Gomez, 6-2, 6-1; Gutierrez defeated EC's Quinonez, 6-2, 7-6; EC's Tindall defeated Warren, 1-6, 6-4, 13-11; Curtis beat EC's Yarborough by forfeit; EC's Wellerman beat Olivia White, 6-1, 6-0; and EC's Johnston defeated Taylor, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.

The East Central men and women will complete the regular season with matches at Meridian Community College at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 13. The MACJC State/NJCAA Region 23 Tournament will be held April 19-21 in Meridian.
