Late Goal Gives ICC Win over Lady Warriors

The Itawamba men's and women's soccer teams picked up MACJC North Division wins over the East Central Community College Lady Warriors and Warriors in matches played Wednesday, Oct. 3, on the ICC campus in Fulton.

The Lady Indians took the women's match over East Central 5-4. The Lady Warriors fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the second half to move in front 4-3 with 19:43 to play. Itawamba would get the game-winner on a header with 1:36 to play.

Freshman forward Leah Anderson from Leyland, England, scored East Central's first half goal with an assist from Macey Spencer, one of three assists the freshman forward had in the match. Anderson also scored a goal in the second half, her fifth of the season.

Also scoring for East Central were sophomore midfielder Noel Ross of Horn Lake and sophomore defender Haley Jones of Pelahatchie. Jones also had an assist in the contest.

The Lady Warriors fell to 4-8 overall with the loss and 1-4 in the North Division. The Itawamba Lady Indians improved to 7-3-1 and 3-2 in MACJC North Division play.

In the men's match that followed, the Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead on their way to a 5-1 North Division win over the Warriors.

Scoring the lone goal for East Central was sophomore midfielder Vitor Gomes of Fortaleza, Brazil, in the second half on an assist by sophomore midfielder Dillon Green out of Warren Central in Vicksburg. It was Gomes' 12th goal of the season, which leads the MACJC North Division.

The Warriors dropped to 2-9 on the season and 2-3 in the North Division, while the Indians improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in the division.

The East Central teams will host Northwest on Friday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m. in Decatur, before a trip to Ridgeland to face Holmes at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Lady Warriors will play their final home match of the season at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, when Dyersburg State (Tenn.) visits Decatur. The Warriors will play their final home match at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, against Andrew College (Cuthbert, Ga.).
