Lady Warrior Soccer Gets 5-0 Shutout at Southwest

The East Central Community College soccer teams picked up a pair of impressive non-division soccer wins Friday, Aug. 30, against the Southwest Mississippi teams in matches played in Summit. 

The East Central women remained perfect on the season with a 5-0 shutout of the Southwest Lady Bears. The ECCC Warriors followed with a 3-1 win over the Bears.

The ECCC Lady Warriors are now 2-0 on the season, while the Warriors improved to 2-1 with their second straight win.

In the women's match, the Lady Warriors got strong a performance from sophomore forward Leah Anderson (Leyland, United Kingdom) who scored three goals, giving her four on the season. Freshman midfielder Abbie Rutledge (Sheffield, United Kingdom) scored on a penalty kick and freshman forward Hannah Herren (Florence) also had a goal. Herren and Anderson each had an assist and sophomore midfielder Macey Spencer (Florence) also had an assist.

"It was a very solid display of soccer from the Lady Warriors today," said head coach Ryan Joiner. "We connected well from the back through the thirds of the field and scored some great team goals. We have to take care of the ball in the middle of the field, but the continuity of our team in building creative attacks has been really positive. Credit to our back five with their desire to defend and keep the clean sheet. Both Phoebe Tomlin and Emily Pitts split time in goal and we only surrendered one shot on goal. 

In the men's match, the Warriors got goals from freshman midfielder Hugo Chagas (Fortaleza, Brazil), assisted by freshman defender George Mota (Fortaleza, Brazil), and from freshman forward Rashun Ludgood (George County), who was assisted by sophomore midfielder Terrell Johnson (Jackson, Murrah). The third goal was an own goal by Southwest. Freshman goalkeeper Ethan Young (Florence) got the win in goal.

The East Central home openers are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, when Holmes visits Decatur for MACJC North Division matches at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Warriors and Lady Warriors will then travel to Fulton to face division opponent Itawamba at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.
