No. 25 Lady Warrior Tennis Defeats Marion 8-1

The East Central Community College tennis teams picked up their second sweep of the season over the Marion Military Institute (Ala.) men and women in matches played Friday, April 5, at the ECCC Tennis Complex in Decatur.

The East Central Warriors earned a 9-0 win over the No. 22 ranked Marion Military Tigers, while the ECCC Lady Warriors won 8-1 over the visiting Lady Tigers.

Both East Central teams also defeated Marion Military in the season-opening matches Feb. 1 in Marion, Ala.

The No. 25 ranked Lady Warriors are now 11-7 on the season, while the Warriors improved to 9-9.

"It was a solid team victory at home for our men," said ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli. "It was a terrific match to get us ready for Itawamba and the state tournament. On the women's side, we had some good individual performances against a shorthanded MMI team."

Men's Doubles Results:
EC's Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia) defeated MMI's Blake Brown and Nathan Johnsen, 8-1; EC's Dylan Barnett (Newton County) and Peyton Chaney (Newton County) defeated MMI's Thomas Chairs and Dustin Matthews, 8-5; EC's Will Ladner (Stone County) and Jake Wofford (East Webster) defeated MMI's Dominique Ingram and Linus McFarland, 8-3.

Men's Singles Results:
EC's Lawrance defeated Brown, 6-2, 6-1; EC's Santitto defeated Chairs, 6-0, 6-3; EC's Barnett defeated Ingram, 6-2, 6-4; EC's Isaac Keen (Winston Academy) defeated Johnsen, 6-3, 6-2; EC's Wofford defeated Matthews, 6-2, 7-5; and EC's Chaney defeated McFarland, 6-0, 6-4. 

Women's Doubles Results:
EC's Ali Grace Walker (Newton County) and Josie Hurst (Newton County) defeated Ksenia Vasilyev and Gianna Azzaro, 8-3. EC's Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Kayla Baucum (Newton County) and EC's Bethany Wellerman (Newton County Academy) and Alexis Tindall (Newton County Academy) won by forfeit. 

Women's Singles Results:
Vasilyev beat EC's Gomez, 6-0, 6-0; EC's Tindall defeated Azzaro, 6-1, 6-2; and EC's Madison Crapps (Pisgah) defeated Mackenzie Bailey, 6-0, 6-0. EC's Walker, Wellerman, and Baucum all won by forfeit.

Following matches against Itawamba in Decatur on April 6, the East Central teams will next compete in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State/National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 tournaments April 10-13 in Tupelo.
