Warrior Tennis Falls 6-3 to No. 20 ICC

The East Central Community College Lady Warriors picked up their second tennis win of the spring over visiting Itawamba Friday, March 9, with a 6-3 victory, while the Warriors fell to the visiting No. 20 ICC Indians 6-3.

The MACJC matches were played at the Tennis Complex on the ECCC campus in Decatur.

The East Central Lady Warriors improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Warriors are now 0-7.

"It was a solid team victory for the women without having the services of Gabby (No. 1 player Gabriela Gomez) for the second straight match," said ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli. "The team really fought back after ICC played well in the doubles."

In the women's doubles matches, ICC's Bailey Gillentine/Kaitlyn Meadows beat EC's Bethany Wellerman of Newton County Academy and Tatiana Quinonez (Bogota, Colombia), 8-4; ICC's Madison Mayhall/Caroline Ferguson defeated EC's Alexis Tindall of Newton County Academy and Caylee Grace Yarborough of Loyd Star, 8-1; and EC's Julia Johnston of Florence and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy beat ICC's Claire Ferguson/Lizbeth Jiminez, 8-5.

In the women's singles, Meadows defeated EC's Madison Crapps of Pisgah High School, 6-0, 7-6; EC's Quinonez defeated Gillentine, 7-6, 6-2; EC's Tindall beat Mayhall, 6-3, 7-5; EC's Yarborough beat Caroline Ferguson, 6-2, 6-2; EC's Wellerman beat Claire Ferguson, 6-2, 6-0; and EC's Johnston beat Georgia Claire Campbell, 6-2, 6-1.

In the men's doubles action, ICC's David Garcia-Perez/Edson Marchant beat EC's Tom Langelaar (Veldhoven, Netherlands) and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central, 9-8 (7-5); ICC's Ezra Blissard/Michael Crotts beat EC's Willie Wooten of Warren Central and Landon Gibson of Clarkdale, 8-5; and ICC's Blake Gregory/Roberto Valadez beat EC's Emontie Lewis of Terry and Jake Wofford of East Webster, 8-1.

In the men's singles, EC's Langelaar beat Garcia-Perez, 2-6, 3-1 (forfeit); Blissard beat EC's Wooten, 6-2, 6-2; Valadez beat EC's Jabour, 6-1, 2-6 (10-6); EC's Lewis beat Marchant, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7); Crotts defeated EC's Gibson 7-6, 6-2; and EC's Isaac Keen of Winston Academy defeated Russell Applewhite, 6-1, 6-1.

The East Central teams will take a week off for Spring Break before hosting the nationally ranked teams from Cowley County Community College (Arkansas City, Kan.) at 2 p.m. on March 19 at the Tennis Complex in Decatur. The Cowley men are ranked No. 7 in the nation and the women are No. 11.
