ECCC Men's Tennis Beats Holmes For First Spring Win

The East Central Community College men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season with a 9-0 victory over Holmes Community College, while the East Central women also defeated the Holmes women 9-0. The matches were played Friday, March 23, at the new Tennis Complex on the ECCC campus in Decatur.

With the team sweep, the Warriors are now 1-8 on the spring season, while the Lady Warriors improved to 5-4.

Following a home match against Wallace State Community College (Hanceville, Ala.) on Saturday, March 24, the Warriors and Lady Warriors will host Meridian Community College on Tuesday, March 27, at 3 p.m. The ECCC teams will then make a visit to Holmes Community College in Goodman on Wednesday, March 28, for matches at 2 p.m.

"This was a good state victory for our men, who were way overdue," said ECCC tennis coach Jay Pacelli. "I believe we can get on a roll now. For the women, it was a solid victory against a shorthanded Holmes team."

In the men's doubles action, EC's Tom Langelaar (Veldhoven, Netherlands) and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central defeated Holmes' Dallas Elmore/Marcus Montfort, 8-1; EC's Willie Wooten of Warren Central and Landon Gibson of Clarkdale beat Joshua Maughan/Nic Bails, 8-4; and EC's Jake Wofford of East Webster and Emontie Lewis of Terry defeated Chris Stuckey/Richard Hernandez, 8-1.

In the men's singles, EC's Langelaar beat Elmore, 6-3, 6-2; EC's Jabour beat Montfort, 6-1, 7-5; EC's Wooten defeated Jacob Hawkins, 6-0, 6-1; EC's Lewis beat Maughan, 6-1, 6-2; EC's Gibson defeated Bails, 6-2, 6-0; and EC's Isaac Keen of Winston Academy defeated Rylee Artman, 6-2, 6-0.

In the women's doubles matches, EC's Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Tatiana Quinonez (Bogota, Colombia) beat Holmes' Alexia Kahmann/Avery Terrell, 8-2; EC's Alexis Tindall of Newton County Academy and Caylee Grace Yarborough of Loyd Star defeated Lucy Oakes/Hanna Thomas, 8-0; and EC's Julia Johnston of Florence and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy won by default.

In the women's singles, EC's Gomez beat Kahmann, 6-0, 6-3; EC's Quinonez beat Thomas, 6-0, 6-0; EC's Bethany Wellerman of Newton County Academy beat Terrell, 6-0, 6-0; EC's Johnston defeated Oakes, 6-2, 6-0; and EC's Tindall and Yarborough both won by default.
